본문 – Blackie the Ship's Cat

Blackie was a special cat. He was a ship's cat.

Cats generally do not like water, but Blackie spent a lot of time at sea.

A ship's cat did many good things for sailors, especially on a long voyage.

  

Sailors often felt lonely during long voyages, so they welcomed a ship's cat.

It also kept rats away from the ship. Some sailors believed that a ship's cat brought good luck.

They also believed that it could protect their ship from dangerous weather.

Some ship's cats became famous, and Blackie was one of them.

   

In 1941, Blackie met Winston Churchill, the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.

Blackie was the ship's cat of a Royal Navy battleship. Churchill was on that ship.

He was going to a secret place to meet U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt.

     

Blackie tried to get off the ship with Churchill, but Churchill touched his head to stop him.

Someone took a picture of that moment.

The picture became famous, and people gave Blackie a new name, Churchill.
